Understanding Dividends

What is dividend yield?

Dividend yield is the annual dividend payment expressed as a percentage of the stock's current price. A stock priced at $100 that pays $4 per year has a 4% yield. Higher yield means more income relative to your investment, though very high yields can signal elevated risk.

How often are dividends paid?

Most US stocks pay dividends quarterly — four times per year. Some pay monthly (common with REITs and certain ETFs), and others pay semi-annually or annually. European stocks typically pay once or twice per year. This calculator assumes quarterly payments for simplicity.

How do I calculate dividend income?

Multiply the number of shares you own by the annual dividend per share. For example, owning 200 shares of a stock that pays $2.00 per share annually generates $400 per year in dividend income — or $100 per quarter. This calculator does this instantly as you type.

Are dividends taxed?

Yes — dividend taxation varies by country and holding period. In the US, qualified dividends are taxed at lower capital gains rates (0%, 15%, or 20%). In Europe, withholding taxes often apply at source. Always consult a tax advisor for your specific situation. This calculator shows gross income before tax.
